Ph.D Programmes Admission 2012-13

December Session

The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal is rated as one of the top Institutions in India


Ph.D: Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences and Management, Information Technology, Mathematical and Computational Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mining Engineering, Physics

Eligibility: Admission to Ph.D programme shall be open to candidates who passed the prescribed qualifying examination with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 6.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system, or not less than 60% marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public/university examinations conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme)

However, this prescribed minimum shall be a CGPA of 6.0 or 55% marks in the aggregate for SC/ST candidates

Selection Procedure: Selection of candidates for admission to Ph.D programme will be based upon the academic performance in the qualifying examinations, written aptitude test, presentation on a research topic and interview as specified by the concerned departments

Financial Assistance: The award of Institute fellowship is based on the minimum qualification/eligibility for the respective Ph.D programme

Students with M.E./M.Tech or equivalent degree are eligible for a fellowship of Rs 18,000/- per month for the first two years and Rs 20,000/- per month for the third year

Students with M.Sc/MBA or equivalent degree are eligible for a fellowship of Rs 16,000/- per month for the first two years and Rs 18,000/- per month for the third year

Students are supposed to assist in teaching and laboratory assignment by the department and are eligible for 30 days leave per year

Full time scholars with Institute fellowship are permitted to leave the Institution only after submitting the synopsis

Full-time sponsored candidates may receive complete financial support including stipend, contingency grants and project expenses from the sponsoring organizations

Internal registrants (Institute faculty/staff, project staff) are expected to work for their Ph.D programmewhile fulfilling their normal duties

External registrants are expected to carry out their research work in their parent organization after fulfilling certain pre-requisites in the Institute

They are not entitled to Institute scholarship

The external candidate shall produce a sponsorship certificate from his employer and submit it along with the application for admission

A minimum of one semester residential requirement is to be completed by all external registrants

Sponsored CandidatesA letter from the employer must be furnished stating that the candidate is being sponsored to get admission

The employer should also indicate that the candidate will not be withdrawn midway till the completion of the course

Application Form: The prescribed application form and information bulletin can be downloaded from the Institute website www.nitk.ac.in

The application form can be duly filled and sent to the Dy Registrar (Academic), National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, Srinivasnagar, Mangalore-575025, Karnataka on or before 03rd December, 2012 along with the demand draft of Rs 500/- (Rs 150/- for SC/ST) drawn in favour of the Director, NITK, Surathkal payable at State Bank of India, or Canara Bank, NITK, campus branch, Surathkal

Candidates sponsored by the educational institutions/industries must get their applications forwarded through proper channel

Applications which are incomplete/defective/received late are liable to be rejected summarily and no correspondence will be entertained on such applications

If a candidate desires to apply to more than one department, he/she should submit separate application along with demand draft for each Ph.D programme

Candidates called for interview will have to appear for interview at their own cost

The interview will be held at NITK, Surathkal

Last date for receiving completed applications: 03rd December, 2012, Monday

Preparing preliminary merit list or short listing: 07th December, 2012, Friday

Last date for dispatch of call letters to short-listed candidates, and announcement in the website by respective departments: 07th December, 2012, Friday

Selection test and/or interview: 17th December, 2012, Monday

Publication of provisional selection/merit-list on website by respective departments: 18th December, 2012, Tuesday

Last date for sending admission orders/letters: 24th December, 2012, Monday

Reporting dates for selection list candidates: 19th December, 2012 to 28th December, 2012

Last date for sending admission orders/letters to waiting list candidates: 01st January, 2013, Tuesday

Last date for reporting, for waiting list candidates: 02nd January, 2013, Wednesday
